WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT - OUTFIT CHOICE ADVICE FROM A PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

Deciding what to wear for a photoshoot can be quite daunting.

I’m sure you are looking at your wardrobe thinking there’s nothing in there that’s nice enough for such a special occasion. And then you go out to buy something new but it’s so hard to choose! You are not sure what will photograph well. What is not too casual but not too dressy either and still feels like..YOU.

And when you have to choose outfits for the whole family??? Oh...what a nightmare!!! They have to be nice, they have to match, the kids and their dad have to agree wearing them!!! And surely enough not breaking the bank with new outfits for everyone would be great too.

I’ll give you some great news though. There are a few things you can do that will make your pre photoshoot prep easier:

  1. Look around the house. What is the general vibe like? It would help greatly if you choose a colour scheme for the photoshoot outfits that will look great with your home decor. Afterall you are getting professional photos done to show them off displayed in your home, right?

  2. Simple is always best. Go for timeless and simple outfits. This way your portraits will never feel dated and you will be proud to display them for years to come.

  3. Keep it within your regular style. Sure, you want to look your best in your portraits and choosing beautiful, special outfits is the way to go. But don’t choose clothes that you wouldn’t normally see yourself wearing and don’t feel like you.

  4. If choosing outfits for the whole family, go for matching pieces. You don’t have to wear the same colour, but going with a matching palette and style would be great.

  5. Avoid big and loud prints. They look great in a fashion editorials but can be quite distracting in portraits. And big no-no to thin stripes. They make a funny fisual effect when photographed.

  6. For the kids clothes please try to go with plain clothes. I know they like cool and fun prints. But those prints will steal from the timeless look of your portraits.

  7. SHOES!!! If you don’t own some elegant, simple shoes that match your outfits, go barefoot. Yes, you read this right! Barefoot will look way better than shoes that don’t match the outfits or the other family member’s footwear. And it’s fun too!

  8. Always, ALWAYS!!! Ask your photographer when unsure. And when sure too! Even if you’re awesome at styling, still send them some phone snaps of the outfits you chose. I promise, they will really appreciate that. They will be able to give their opinion or just just a pat on the back. But this way they will be better prepared for your photoshoot which can only result in better images for you.
